Chill Out - Here’s How You Really Own Winter in Perth
Winter is coming…but here in Perth, we do it a little differently! As the temps start to drop and the skies get a little moodier, it’s the perfect time to prep for the cooler months ahead. This handy guide gives you everything you need to know - whether you're new to the city or just need a seasonal refresh. From what the weather’s really like, to what to wear, and the best things to do when it’s a bit brisk out, consider this your ultimate (and totally chill) guide to winter in Perth. Let’s get into it!
How’s The Weather
1. How cold is cold?
Winter in Perth runs from June to August, with July being the chilliest of the bunch. But don’t stress - Perth’s version of winter is pretty mid compared to the icy dramas you’ll find in other parts of Australia. Expect lots of rainy days (umbrella = your new bestie), with daytime temps hovering around a comfy 18 - 20°C. Early mornings can dip to 8 - 10°C, and yeah, it can feel extra nippy when the wind or rain kicks in, but those colder snaps usually only last a few days.
On the flip side, you might just score a few bonus sunny days in the low 20s. Fun fact: Perth has only dipped below zero once in recent history: back in 2006! So no, you won’t be turning into Frosty The Snowman anytime soon. And don’t forget, when spring and summer roll around, Perth’s sunshine game is strong!
2. Does it get heckin’ windy?
Oh, heck yes. On most days, expect breezes ranging from 15 to 25 km/h, which can make it feel way colder than it actually is. But hey, it’s not all gusts and gales, some days bring that perfect, gentle breeze that makes winter walks feel like an Elsa moment. Just keep an extra layer or a windbreaker handy and you’ll be good to go!

3. What about the rain?
Rain and winter in Perth go hand in hand, especially in July when the wet season is in full swing. But don’t worry, it’s not usually an all-day downpour situation. Perth rain likes to make a dramatic entrance, hang around for a bit, and then clear up - only to pop back again later. You might even get a surprise storm or a cheeky bit of hail, especially in late July or early August. So, keep an eye on the forecast!
What Are Your Must-Haves?
1. Windbreakers or Puffer Jackets
Let’s start with the basics! While Perth’s winter temps aren’t too wild, you’ll still want to gear up properly. Most days, a regular jacket or a cozy sweater will do the trick, but on those rainy, windy, why-did-I-leave-my-bed kind of days, a solid puffer jacket or windbreaker is a total game-changer. Look for ones with nylon or polyester on the outside to help keep that wind and water out. Not sure where to grab one? UNIQLO, Cotton On, or even Kmart in the city is just a short walk from Campus and has plenty of affordable, good-quality options that’ll keep you warm and on top of your style game.
2. Strong Umbrellas
We weren’t kidding about the wind in Perth, especially when it teams up with the rain. That’s why having a solid, wind-resistant umbrella is a must. You can bring one from home or easily grab one once you’ve checked-in with us. Honestly, it might be smart to have a backup too, because yes, Perth winds will flip your umbrella inside out!
If you're more of a raincoat kind of person, go for it! But let’s be real, umbrellas are usually the quicker, no-fuss option. You’ll find them pretty much everywhere too, should you need one in a pinch, just look out for Kmart, Officeworks, or even big supermarkets.

3. Plenty of Winter Clothing Essentials
Winter in Perth might not be freezing, but it can feel like it drags on, thanks to cooler temps, regular rain, and those sneaky high-pressure systems. Add in the wind, and suddenly 18°C feels more like 10. That’s why it’s a smart move to stock up on winter essentials like jumpers, sweaters, and jackets to rotate through the season. And don’t forget about your feet! Thicker socks are ideal for keeping your piggies cozy, whether you’re braving the outdoors or just lounging in your room with a hot choccy and a good Netflix queue.
4. Comfy Blankets
One of the absolute best things about winter in Perth? Snuggling up in bed or on the couch, all bundled up like a human burrito. It’s the perfect excuse to get as cozy as humanly possible, and that means finding a blanket or doona that you really love. If you’re particular about fabric or thickness, you might even want to bring one from home. And if you’re someone who gets really bothered by the cold, consider investing in a weighted or heated blanket for that extra layer of warmth and comfort. Need one ASAP? Head to Kmart, David Jones, or Myer in the city!

5. Not Really Must-haves, But Are Good to Have!
Now let’s talk about extras. Beanies, thick scarves, and gloves aren’t a must for surviving Perth’s winter, but they definitely add a little extra warmth and a lot of style points. You’ll see plenty of people rocking them around the city, but don’t stress if you don’t have them. Same goes for hand-held heaters or heat packs - they’re not essential, but if you’re someone who likes to keep your hands toasty 24/7, they’re a great little add-on.

You can easily grab some from Chemist Warehouse, just a few minutes away from Campus. As for thermal underwear a.k.a long johns, they’re good to have in your wardrobe, but usually layering up with a solid puffer jacket does the job just fine!
Winter Activities To Look Out For
1. Explore Museums and Art Galleries
Cold, rainy, and windy outside? Sounds like the perfect excuse to stay indoors. And lucky for you, Perth has some amazing indoor spots worth exploring. Winter is the ideal time to get a little artsy and dive into the local culture scene. Check out Museum Boola Bardip for exhibitions and Western Australian history, wander through the stunning collections at the Art Gallery Western Australia (AGWA), or get inspired at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA). The best part? They’re all just a short walk from Campus!

San Churro has you covered (Our tip: Don’t skip the toasted marshmallows!). If you’re feeling a little fancy, Kuld Creamery offers a winter special called ‘The Crumble’ (think warm custard, crumble, and gelato). And for warm Asian dessert vibes, Dessert Garden is your go-to.

Of course, hitting the gym is always an option, but if you’re after something a little different, try bowling or arcade games at Strike just around the corner. For golf lovers, Holey Moley offers mini golf with a twist and it’s super close by. You can also join our weekly Campus Perth classes like Muay Thai, yoga, or Zumba to keep your body fit and moving. Other activities you can check out also include indoor rock climbing spots, and pilates or yoga studios just nearby!
